AI using outdated information

UK government content teams have found that Google’s AI overviews are pulling from outdated gov.uk pages that have not been maintained for years, serving confidently wrong answers to users searching for official fees, rules and guidance. One example uncovered in the episode: people searching the cost of registering a charity were shown the old Companies House fee of £13 online, when the current fee is £100. The Department for Business and Trade has begun auditing and redirecting old pages, but the underlying issue is structural. AI models sound authoritative even when sourcing zombie pages from 2017. For practices advising clients on government processes, this is a useful reminder that AI-generated answers on regulatory matters need checking at source.
